Actions
– Vitamin C is a water– soluble vitamin with strong redox capacity and it takes part in a number of biochemical reactions mostly involving oxidation. It is related to the synthesis of collagen, proteoglycans and other organic constituents of the intracellular matrix of diverse tissue as tooth, bone and capillary endothelium or tissue repair.
– Vitamin C has a direct effect on collagen peptide synthesis and influences protein hydroxylation indirectly.
– Vitamin C is not significantly stored by the body. It must be replenished regularly through diet or other means to maintain essential tissue levels. Thus this vitamin is rapidly depleted in conditions interfering with its intake or absorption. The most common symptoms of vitamin C deficiency are prolonged or imperfect wound healing defects in tooth– formation, cessation of bone growth, extreme vessel wall fragility, leakage from capillaries, susceptibility to infections.
Contra-Indications
Prolonged use of large doses of vitamin C is contra– indicated in:
– Patients with Glucose– 6– phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
– Patients with history of renal calculi, hyperoxaluria and primary oxalosis.
– Patients with thalassemia.
Side effect
– Digestive disorders: gastric burning, diarrhea.
– Hyperoxaluria.

PREGNANCY AND LACTATION:

Interaction
– Concurrent administration of vitamin C and Aspirin is known to result in increased urinary excretion of the former and decreased excretion of the latter.
– Coadministration of vitamin C and Fluphenazine may lead to decreased Fluphenazine plasma concentration.
– Concurrent administration of more than 200mg of vitamin C per 30mg of elemental iron increases absorption of iron from the GI tract.
– Large doses of vitamin C may destroy substantial amount of vitamin B12 in vitro.
OVERDOSAGE & MANAGEMENT:
Symptoms of vitamin C overdose include: kidney stones, nausea, gastritis and diarrhea. Forced diuresis by infusion may be effective after ingestion of large doses of vitamin C.
