Indications

Mucolytic in acute or chronic inflammatory conditions of larynx, trachea, bronchi and lung, bronchiectasis, pneumoconiosis.

Actions

– Bromhexine is a synthetic derivative of the herbal active ingredient Vasicine. Preclinically, it has been shown to increase the proportion of serous bronchial secretion.
– Bromhexine enhances mucus transport by reducing mucus viscosity and by activating the ciliated epithelium (mucociliary clearance).

Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to any ingredient of the medicine.

Side effect

– Rare, mild gastrointestinal disorders (e.g., nausea, vomiting) have been reported.
Discontinue and inform your doctor about side– effects when using this medicine.

Precaution

– Patients being treated with DISOLVAN should be notified of an expected increase in the flow of secretions.
– Patients with history of peptic ulcer, asthma.
PREGNANCY AND LACTATION:
Caution should be exercised when the drug is given in the first trimester of pregnancy and in lactation.

Interaction

– Administration of Bromhexine together with antibiotics (Amoxicillin, Cefuroxime, Erythromycin, Doxycycline) leads to higher antibiotic concentrations in the lung tissues.
– Do not coadminister this drug with other antitussive agents (mucolytics, decongestants or expectorants).
Inform your doctor or pharmacist about other treatments to avoid interactions.
OVERDOSAGE:
Should overdosage occur, turn to the nearest healthcare facility for medical attention of the healthcare professionals.

Storage

Store in a dry place (RH ≤ 70%), not exceeding 30^oC. Protect from light.

Dosage

– Adults and children over 12 years: 10ml, 3 times daily.
– Children from 6 – 12 years: 5ml, 3 times daily.
– Children from 2 – < 6 years: 2.5ml, 3 times daily.
– Children under 2 years: 1.25ml, 3 times daily.

Indications

It is used in conditions associated with disorder of bronchial secretion, particularly in acute bronchitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis.

Actions

Bromhexine hydrochloride is a bronchial mucus modifier and mucolytic drug. By activating the synthesis of sialidized acid mucins and breaking disulfide bonds linking different acid mucopolysaccharide fibres it renders the bronchial fluids thinner and less viscous and facilitates the expectoration of the secretions.

Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to any ingredient of this drug.

Side effect

– Uncommon: gastralgia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, sweating, skin eruptions, urticaria.
– Rarely: dryness of mouth, elevation in AST, ALT.
– Inform your doctor about side– effects when using this medicine.

Precaution

– The concomitant administration of antitussive drugs with bromhexine should be avoided because of the potential of accumulation of bronchial fluids in the respiratory tract.
– Caution should be exercised in patients with asthma, since bromhexine may cause bronchial constriction in some with known hypersensitivity or idiosyncratic reaction to it.
– Caution should be exercised in patients with severe hepatic, or renal dysfunction or history of peptic ulcer.
– Caution should be exercised in elderly patients, patients with asthenia that are unable to expectorate.
– Caution should be exercised when the drug is given to drivers or operators of machinery.
PREGNANCY & LACTATION:
– It is not recommended for use during pregnancy.
– It is not recommended to be given during lactation, if the drug is needed, discontinue breastfeeding.

Interaction

– The drugs that reduce secretions (include bronchial and tracheal secretions) such as atropine– like drugs (or anticholinergics) should not be given concomitantly with bromhexine because they reduce bromhexine effect.
– Do not use concomitantly with antitussive drugs.
– Do not use concomitantly with antibiotics (amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin, doxycycline) may increase the antibacterial concentrations in pulmonary and bronchial tissues.
OVERDOSAGE & MANAGEMENT:
– There is no report of bromhexine overdosage.
– Should overdosage occur, turn to the nearest healthcare facility for medical attention of the healthcare professionals.

Dosage

This drug should be taken after meals.
– Adults and children > 10 years: 1 – 2 tablets, 3 times daily.
– Children from 5 – 10 years: ½ tablet, 3 times daily.
– Children from 2 – < 5 years: 1/4 tablet, 3 times daily.
Do not exceed the therapy course beyond 8 – 10 days without physician’s instruction.
