Indications

Treatment of wide variety of infections as the followings:
– Upper and lower respiratory tract: sinusitis, pharyngitis, pneumonia, bronchitis,…
– Genitourinary tract: gonorrhea, pyelonephritis,…
– Digestive tract: cholecystitis, typhoid,…
– Skin and soft tissue.

Pharmacology

Cefixime is a semi– synthetic third– generation Cephalosporin antibacterial and is given by mouth in the treatment of susceptible infection. Cefixime is bactericidal and acts by inhibiting synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. It has a wide spectrum of activity against most of Gr(+) and Gr(– ) microorganism.

Pharmacokinetics

Only 40 to 50% of an oral dose of Cefixime is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, whether taken before or after meals. Information on the distribution of Cefixime in body tissues and fluids is limited. It crosses the placenta. About 20% of an oral dose (or 50% of an absorbed dose) is excreted unchanged in the urine within 24 hours. Up to 60% may be eliminated by nonrenal mechanisms.

Contra-Indications

– Hypersensitivity to Cephalosporins, Penicillins.
– Children under 6 months.

Side effect

– Diarrhea, headache, vertigo, rash, pruritus, urticaria, drug reduced fever and arthralgia.Discontinue the medicine and inform your doctor about side effects when using this medicine.

Precaution

– Allergy to other drugs, or sensitive to Penicillin, because there are reports of cross hypersensitivity among Penicillins and Cephalosporins. If an allergic reaction to CEFIXIM MKP occurs, discontinue the drug immediately.
– Patients with renal impairment or history of gastrointestinal inflammation, especially diseases of large intestine.
– Pregnancy and lactation.

Interaction

Should be used with cautions in combining with Warfarin.

Shelf life

– 24 months from the manufacturing date.

Storage

Store in dry place, not exceeding 30oC. Protect from light.

Dosage

– Adults and children > 12 years: the usual dose is 200 – 400mg, divided 1 – 2 times daily, depending on the severity of infection.
– Children ≥ 6 months: at the beginning of treatment, the children’s dose is 8mg/kg/day, use once daily or divide in 2 equal doses during 12 hours.
The dose for elderly and patients with renal impairment should be reduced.
