Antituss

Indications

Antitussive, expectorant. Treatment of coughs due to common cold, inflammation of respiratory tract, bronchial irritation.

Present

– Blister of 10 capsules. Box of 10 blisters.

Composition

Terpin hydrate ……………………………………………….100mg
Dextromethorphan hydrobromide ………………………10mg
Excipients s.q. for…………………………………..…… 1 capsule
(Corn starch, lactose, talc).

Actions

– Terpin has been stated to increase bronchial secretion directly and has been given by mouth as an expectorant in productive cough.
– Dextromethorphan, a morphine derivative, is a cough suppressant that acts upon the cough center in the oblongata. The drug has no analgesic effect and in general, has very little, if at all, the sedative effect.
Dextromethorphan is used for temporary relief of cough due to mild irritation of bronchi and throat as in common colds, or by inhaled irritant. It is effective in management of chronic nonproductive cough.
– In therapeutic doses the antitussive effect of the drug may last for 5 – 6 hrs.

Contra-Indications

– Hypersensitivity to any ingredient of the medicine.
– Patients receiving MAOIs.
– Children under 2 years.

Side effect

– Common: fatigue, dizziness, tachycardia, nausea, skin erythema.
– Uncommon: urticaria.
– Rare: rash, slight drowsiness sometimes occurred, GI disorders, toxic psychosis, CNS depression and respiratory depression can cause when using with high doses.
– Inform your doctor about side– effects when using this medicine.

Precaution

– Cough accompanied by excessive secretions, persistent or chronic cough (e.g. smoking, asthma, emphysema).
– Respiratory depression.
– Atopic children.
– Operating machinery or driving.
– The drug should not be used in high doses or for long periods because of the potential of development of dextromethorphan dependence.
PREGNANCY AND LACTATION:
Caution should be exercised when it is given to pregnant women and nursing mothers.

Interaction

– Avoid combination with quinidine and psychotherapeutic agents, alcohol, alcoholic beverages.
– Do not use with other cough medicines (mucolytics or expectorants).
OVERDOSAGE:
Should overdosage occur, turn to the nearest healthcare facility for medical attention of the healthcare professionals.

Shelf life

– 36 months from the manufacturing date.

Storage

Store in a dry place (RH ≤ 70%), not exceeding 30oC. Protect from light.

Dosage

– Adults: 1 – 2 capsules, 2 – 3 times daily.
– Children > 6 years: 1 capsule, 2 – 3 times daily.
