Indications

Antitussive, expectorant. Treatment of coughs due to cold, laryngotracheitis, bronchitis, pharyngitis,…

Present

Blister of 10 sugar– coated tablets. Box of 10 blisters.

Composition

Terpin hydrate………………………………………………….100mg
Codeine…………………………………………………………….10mg
Excipients s.q. for……………………………………………1 tablet
(Sodium starch glycolate, lactose, cassava starch, gelatin, talc, magnesium stearate, sucrose, acacia, methyl hydroxybenzoate, propyl hydroxybenzoate, blue patente, beeswax, paraffin).

Actions

– Codeine is a phenanthrene– derivative opiate antitussive agent. Codeine causes suppression of the cough reflex by a direct effect on the cough center in the medulla of the brain and appears to exert a drying effect on respiratory tract mucosa and to increase viscosity of bronchial secretion.
– Terpin has been stated to increase bronchial secretion directly and has been given by mouth as an expectorant.

Contra-Indications

– Hypersensitivity to any ingredients of medicine. – Children under 30 months. – Respiratory insufficiency, asthmatic cough.

Side effect

– Constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, bronchospasms, allergic cutaneous reactions and rare respiratory depression may occur when using TERPIN– CODEIN.
– Inform your doctor about side– effects when using this medicine.

Precaution

– Codeine should be used at lowest effective dosage and shortest possible time.
– Because of potential respiratory depression codeine containing medicines should be used for relief of acute moderate pain in children over 12 years of age only when other pain– killers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen appear to be ineffective.
– Codeine is not recommended to be given to children with conditions associated with respiratory disorder (e.g. dyspnea or COPD,…).
– Caution should be exercised when codeine is given to children under 12 years of age (due to the fact that research data regarding the safety and efficacy of the drug in this group of population is still limited).
– Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages because it may increase the sedative effects.
– TERPIN– CODEIN may cause drowsiness therefor use with caution in drivers or operators of machinery.
– Use with caution in patients with intracranial hypertension.
PREGNANCY & LACTATION:
Pregnant women and nursing mothers should not use this drug.

Interaction

– Combination requiring precaution:
+ Other CNS depressants: increased CNS depression.
+ Other morphine– derivatives: potential respiratory insufficiency.
– Do not coadminister this drug with other antitussive agents (mucolytics decongestants or expectorants).
OVERDOSAGE & MANAGEMENT:
Should overdosage occur, turn to the nearest healthcare facility for medical attention of the healthcare professionals.

Shelf life

36 months from the manufacturing date.

Storage

Store in a dry place (RH ≤ 70%), not exceeding 30oC. Protect from light

Dosage

– Hypersensitivity to any ingredient of the medicine.
– Respiratory insufficiency, asthmatic cough.
– Children and adolescents under 18 years of age recently undergoing elective tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy.
– Children under 30 months of age.
– Children with history of seizures or febrile convulsions.
